Room On The Broom for our first Halloween!

We are celebrating our first Halloween with lots of Kit Kats, Twixs and a not so scary picture book this year. Room On The Broom, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, is an engaging and witty story of the adventure of a friendly witch and her cat who were flying on a broom. They had a number of misfortunes during their flying but they came across  very generous and loyal friends.

First ,the witch lost her hat so they went down to the ground to look for it.  A dog found it and brought it to her: ‘I am a dog, as keen as can be./ Is there room on the broom/ for a dog like me?’. The kind witch cried ‘Yes’ and off they went but soon her bow was lost.  A bird found it and asked to join the company on the broom and again the witch accepted politely. After a while, as the party was flying in a storm, the witch’s wand falls to the ground.  A frog caught it and as expected gets on the broom with the others.

All of a sudden the broom snapped in two and ‘down fell the cat and the dog/ and the frog. Down they went into a bog’. A mean red dragon was near and was happy to see a witch as his favourite meal was witch with chips. What happened to the witch? Did she become a dragon’s snack for his tea?

No spoilers here. Read the book to find out! You will definitely enjoy the metrical rhyme, the amusing illustrations, the unique way Donaldson introduces new vocabulary to your little ones and helps them consolidate it through repetition. It is recommended for children aged 4-8 years old.
